Why join Dance4Joy?

Not so long ago, all humans were dancers.
We danced around tribal fires to celebrate seasons, successful hunts, and the arrival of new life. Through shared rhythm, we connected to one another and the tides of nature. We also danced to heal.
In Dance4Joy we gather around the fire of our hearts and the desire to express every part of ourselves, growing stronger and more expansive together.

Increase physical fitness
Part of the Dance4Joy promise is that you will raise your heartbeat and maintain that during the routine, increasing cardiovascular health.
increase flexibility
Dance4Joy incorporates simple yoga poses and stretching to increase flexibility. Joint mobility usually increases within weeks.
moderate emotions
Modern dance components help dancers to connect emotionally to uplifting music. Martial arts and sounding aid emotional release.

refresh your mind
Invigorating music and playful choreography help you to drop out of your mind and into your body to lighten up your daily thought patterns.
increase strength
Through explosive martial arts and poses using your own body weight you gradually build muscle strength.
enjoy artistic expression
The choreography offered in Dance4Joy is only a framework. Dancers are encouraged to adjust the moves and add their own artistic expression.
To dance is to be out of yourself. Larger, more beautiful, more powerful.

Lizelle Steyn

Choreographer and founder of Dance4Joy

about Lizelle Steyn

Lizelle has always danced for the love of movement and connecting with the music, herself and fellow dancers. She has been practising the Nia Technique for 15 years and also has exposure to other conscious dance modalities such as 5 Rhythms and Biodanza. She has hosted Argentine tango retreats with her tango teacher Rachael Glaser and also offers Zorba dance workshops, where we connect with kefi - the Greek joy of life.

Dancing has been a life saver for her during three decades of working in demanding corporate roles. She wishes to offer this healing practice to all who need to reduce anxiety, release underlying tension and dance themselves to optimal physical and mental health.

what our dancers say about dance4joy

Dance4joy - inspired by:

Dance4Joy was inspired by the Nia Technique, a fitness fusion combining the energy of the dance arts, martial arts and the healing arts. The variety of techniques incorporated into the practice encourages movement in ever-varying mood and intensity.

Conscious dance practitioners will also recognise elements of Gabrielle Roth's 5 Rhythms, Dr Rolando Toro's Biodanza and the musical progression of Ecstatic dance.

There are also hints of playful fitness practices, such as Animal Flow.

Lizelle is always trying out new modalities and bringing new elements into her dance routines.
